I got a sneak peek at this book (thanks to NetGalley) back in January and immediately fell in love with the main character's voice and personality. I also enjoyed the premise of this quirky, original boy being cursed with dead animals for pets. Unfortunately, that sass & quirk that are so much of Rex's character became a bit too repetitive for me after a while and I slowly lost interest in the book. I recently picked it back up and finished; while it wasn't my cup of tea, I can see several of my fourth-grade kiddos loving it.

Hilarious. Basically Rex Dexter wants a dog but he’s not responsible enough yet. So his parents get him a “practice pet” who’s a chicken. Through a comedically obvious “Big” type accident the chicken gets steamrolled and dies. Then his ghost who Rex can see and talk to comes back and the real story starts. It’s fun. It’s entertaining for both kids and adults. I highly recommend reading this one to your child. Or listening together bc the audiobook version is on point.

This was a fun mystery with lovable characters! I would recommend it to a 2nd - 6th grader that loves clever stories! Aaron Reynolds is a favorite with his Creepy Carrots series, so I feel like many would pick this up!

While this is not my cup of tea, I can see children around 3rd grade who like funny (silly) enjoying this.

Update: Came back to this because our committee wanted to give it a chance. Rex was still a jerk.

DNF p.49
Loved the premise and really enjoyed the MC’s snark in the beginning, but the longer it went on the less funny it was. Rex was just a jerk.

For an adult, Rex is a little annoying and he doesn't exhibit a ton of character growth throughout the book, but for students, this is a fun middle grade book I can't keep on the shelf.

Rex Dexter has that unwarented egotism that morphs into humor and not annoyance. Fans of Wimpy Kid will love this alternative. Realistic fans that a reluctant to endulge any fantasy books will also get behind this gentle fantasy involving a curse and talking animals.
