In "Grand Tour," Elisa Gonzalez creates poem of exquisite beauty and tenderness. Gonzalez explores the self, memory, and dealing with trauma within the book. There's extreme sadness and pain throughout these poems, and Gonzalez connects these things with the quest for safety and home. The poem's narrator searches for a place she can feel comfortable and free after an abusive family life.

I tend to read very quickly through books of poetry, but this collection had me pausing. There are many lines that beg to be underlined, reread, and shared. The words have movement my highlighter begs to capture.

Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC!

Reading through this poetry collection, Elisa Gonzalez provides an emotional, deep, and profound look into what it means to grieve, to love, and to live. I enjoyed the collection and its a collection that will stay with me for a long time.

I was looking forward to this book so much and I have to admit I’m a little disappointed. I first read her work in the New Yorker and I adored the poem “After my Brother’s Death…”. The rest of the collection did not feel like that poem at all, and I found it dull the same way I found Judas Goat dull. Focused on theory, reference, and philosophy (which isn’t necessarily bad) but lacking deep emotional core or narrative that would make a poem memorable. It felt like reading poems at an arm’s length. I could imagine those who enjoy this style of poetry would like this collection, but it sadly is not for me.

this was a great poetry debut from Elisa Gonzalez!
I loved the classic and greek themes, mixed in with the love, desire and grief, it really hit me in the feels at times. I found it moved well, but was also really well written. I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

thank you to the lads at FSG and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book

A really great debut from Elisa Gonzalez!

There were parts of this collection that just sang. I really liked all of the references to classics and the descending self-portrait poems. They’re introspective and vivid. Her command of language is evident and she manages to weave a number of themes together well.

Thanks to FSG and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this. Being introduced to new poets is always such a highlight.

Well-written poems with a fair amount of classics references. Poems about family history and relation to ancestry, a sense of place, love, and the small moments of life.
