I have already read this book twice this year and it’s only March. I’ve never been a big fan of environmental philosophy/ethics books, but this one really tugs at my heart strings and makes me think deeply. Beautifully written and thought provoking!

The book had a five star rating from me until I got to the selected journals and letters. A Sand County Almanac is a great book for learning about the history of conservation. It also a number of excellent passages about conservation topics, especially those related to the economics of conservation. The second section, collecting other conservation writings was also very good, though it was obvious that some of these writings either informed his book or vice versa because there were a number of identical passages. The selected journals and letters seemed basically pointless for anyone that is not specifically interested in the life of Aldo Leopold. They also seem contradictory to the conservation writings themselves because, for a man who lamented the over-hunting of species, the listing of predators as vermin, and the idea of merely sport hunting, he sure celebrates the shooting of coyotes and foxes that he has no use for other than pelts. His journals make him come across as the exact kind of hunter he denigrates in his other writings.
