It's a joy to hear an artist tell you all about the joy she finds in her art.  There is so much else to this book, but that's what I loved most.  Reading about an artist in love with art.

Misty Copeland was introduced to ballet at an after school program. She began taking dance classes at age 13, attending the San Pedro Dance Center. After only three months of training, she was able to dance en pointe, which I find to be impressive. She eventually went on to be a principal with the American Ballet Theatre, where she is still dancing. She is an exquisite dancer, and a beautiful person. Without encouragement and intervention along the way, she may never have became the wonderful dancer she is today. The subtitle of her book, "an unlikely ballerina", absolutely makes sense after reading it.

Nice little biography from Misty Copeland. I knew of her; but this read brought me closer to her life. She had a rough and unstable childhood, but I'm glad that she still persevered through it all and made a name for herself. She did open the door wider for young, black ballerinas. In the end, I'm just glad she had made a name for herself :)

Some of the writing was repetitive, but I enjoyed the story so much I'm giving this 4 1/2 stars. I saw Misty Copeland perform on the Stephen Colbert show while Yo-Yo Ma played cello, and I was completely mesmerized at her beauty and grace as a dancer. I had never seen or heard of her, I know very little about ballet, but Colbert mentioned her book so I tracked it down. This was a fascinating read, some insight into the world of ballet, but more so the background into her interesting life.

Interesting to read about the "non-glamorous" side to being a ballerina. I'm mad at my myself that it's taken me this long to find out about her!

I first heard about Misty Copeland when she performed Odette from Swan Lake opposite Brooklyn Mack with The Washington Ballet. (I will always be annoyed that TWB didn't give its subscribers the first choice of performances, and we ended up seeing someone else.) I knew nothing about her inspirational life story until reading this memoir. The writing is neither exceptional nor objectionable, and I think anyone interested in finding out more about one of today's ballet stars would enjoy it.
