It was fine. Family drama, secrets, and complex relationships sound potentially entertaining, but found myself wanting to just get it over with. Contrived ending.

It took me over a month, but I finally finished my first book since having a baby. 😂 I love a good family literary drama novel, and this one was fine but not great. It was easy to pick up and put down without losing or forgetting the plot. Some disturbing plot elements that didn’t feel wholly necessary - trigger warning for sexual abuse.

The book just kind of ends. It felt stunted, and made me feel differently about the overall story.

Also, the relations to the 2016 election and the story are meant to give hope, but knowing the results of the election at the time of publishing makes it a horrifying heartbreak of an allegory. I don’t know what this was intended to accomplish, but it did not sit well the entire read.
