Every so often I return to read R. L. Stevenson, finding in him an important bridge between the kind of fully fleshed social vision palpable in Victorian novels and the more sensational, individually-focused vision of contemporary fiction. Like the stories of [a:Joseph Conrad|3345|Joseph Conrad|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1403814208p2/3345.jpg], in whose hands the fabric of the novel becomes stretched and near transparent, the story of Jekyll and Hyde - a tale of terror, yes - exemplifies for me this period's complex separation of individuality from society as they recognize that the secret sharers and public faces are all so many mirrors. It's a devious little tale, more complex and shorter than is frequently recognized or alluded to in popular culture.

"If he be Mr Hyde, I shall be Mr Seek".
4.5 stars because the writing style wasn't really my thing but despite that I loved everything about this short novel.

Supremely well-written, I only wish that I had not known the particulars of this story before reading.

I vastly enjoyed this collection of stories. Stevenson is a great author, and I'm looking forward to reading more of his work.

A novella everyone should read. Though a bit challenging at first due it's complex language of victorian times, it gets easier after a while. Themes are complex and the duality of human nature makes it an exquisite reading. My new favorite book. Highly recommend.
