Most of the thrillers I read in 2022 were written by women, which made this book extra jarring because it's such a Man Wrote This kind of book. It's a solidly mediocre, comfortably predictable kind of thriller, but the way it goes about all these things feels like a Dan Brown wannabe.
From the way the book describes the attractiveness of the two leads (they're both hot and have a tragic past that's absolutely none of their fault Both of them have the personality of a wet blanket and things just happen to them) to the ridiculousness of the fade-to-black ("They stumbled across the suite, through the bedroom door, and onto the bed. Buttons popped and zippers buzzed."). Extra bonus point for everyone's reaction to the murder at the heart of the book - a writer killed after a kinky sex session, that somehow leaves everyone absolutely shocked. All these grizzled detectives and crime scene people can't stop making remarks about how sordid it was that the victim liked to get spanked. Also the 20 years anniversary of 9/11 is a plot point somehow, but it takes a backseat to the "he was a boy she was a girl" hookup between the leads with the backdrop of corporate crime that this book manages to somehow make sound boring.

Anyway, I was going to give this book 3 stars for being harmless reliable entertainment if nothing else, but the end twist about the murder was ridiculous and nowhere as clever as it thought it was. I was sorta looking forward to reading this book and I'm not mad I did, but it was plenty forgettable and I doubt I'll be reading anything by this author again.
