History needs to be taught. This was even more eye opening than I expected

Beautifully written, beautifully illustrated story of George Takei's imprisonment as a child in prison camps during the Japanese Internment in WWII. It is a bit long for a class read aloud in a single sitting, but it is an engaging book for introducing this time period to young children. Could be paired with footage of Takei in Star Trek and footage from Tule Lake and other internment camps.

Highly recommended for elementary and middle school libraries.

I learned a lot from this. I loved what George's father had to say about participating in democracy. It is the duty of all of us to educate ourselves on America's (often horrible) history and try to do better than those who came before us. I love George Takei and this was an incredibly informative and moving insight into his life. I'm glad he has been willing to share his story!
