This dark romance is super fun. I'm not usually a dark romance girlie, but this one was quick and dirty. I actually liked the fact that the characters are a bit older, not over-explained, and that their relationship is unhinged. It's a quick read, and I found so many scenes funny - which is really different for a dark romance. That is what makes it 4-stars for me. I always like some levity and great banter. It is spicy, chaotic, and maybe not *as dark* as some other books out there. Turns out it was right for me, and I read the following two immediately after!

I got to read this book a few days early, and it was a quick read. Sadly, while I love T.L. Smith's books, this one missed the mark for me.

Mostly it just felt incomplete. There wasn't a lot of development in the plot, and I'm not sure what the main conflict/climax of the book was.
Everything was solved very quickly, and other points of suggested conflict just kind of fizzled out (i.e. the tension with Pops).

If this were the first half of a book or duet, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. As is, I feel like it was setting up for something that never came.

To be honest, I wanted to put down the book and stop reading it when I found out dark spice was not my cup of tea, but I really wanted to know what would happen with this Alaska/Sage thing. And god, I'm glad I continued.

At first, I found this "I'm a murderer, I enjoy killing" and "I'm not like other girls" awkward and funny, but it got better. There was character development, and they changed without losing their personality! And the same with their relationship! They got to know each other, and I understood their feelings for each other even though their differences! It was amazing and so rare! Of course, they were fucked up, and their relationship was nowhere near normal, but it was good and healthy for them.

So, yeah, dark romance/spice is not for me, but I will read the other two books.

I loved both Alaska and Zuko!! Definitely a dark romance so be careful if you have an issue with knife play or anything. I enjoyed this book and it was a nice quick read but I definitely had questions about the mask party for one thing. Definitely interested to see how the rest of the series turns out.
