I reeaalllyyyyyy wanted to like this book but the pace moved too slow and all of the characters had far too much resentment (and trauma) to even conceptualize healing or sharing emotions with each other. Incredibly frustrating! Additionally, the author jumped back and forth between the past, present AND characters which made this a very confusing audio to listen to.

The things that saved the story from being DNF?
1. Reading about a black woman who passes in old Hollywood.
2. The narrators

I think the convention of writing historical fiction in dual timelines, past and present, is getting a little tired. Kitty’s story was compelling and interesting, although i think could have been fleshed out a little further. Elise’s story seemed like an afterthought and I didn’t find myself caring much at all about that side of the book. Probably would have given a 4 if it had just focused on Kitty.

May revisit in the future but for now this is too dry and uninteresting.

This book tackled a lot of heavy issues. Overall it was an enjoyable read and would definitely make a great book club read, but the present-day POV at the beginning really dragged, and I had a hard time keeping up with so many characters.
