MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD. Wow. Talk about a roller coaster. While there still wasn't much in terms of physical fights, the excitement and suspense was still heavy through the story. The plot was interesting and intense, leaving a few surprises throughout. I really like Kit and it was awesome to watch her fight for what she cares about, though she paid for it brutally in the end. There were some inconsistencies with Doyle's character, but eventually he warmed to me. At first, I was getting used to Damon's new attitude. He was still possessive and cranky, but I accepted his behaviour because he seemed to really care for Kit. Then he did something massively, monstrously, unforgivably stupid, and I pretty well hated him for it. The consequences of his moronic actions caused a huge, out of the blue twist, and made Kit suffer in ways I almost couldn't fathom. It was almost too much, and while I've never said this about a love interest before, I was glad that Kit finally put him in his place. She's too good for him, and he has a long, LONG way to go before I want to see him again. Still, because of the ending, the style of writing, and the character development, I was able to give this story four stars rather than my intended three. There were a few loose plot holes, but nothing I can't forgive. Interested to see where things go from here!

Colbana Files series is my latest urban fantasy 'find'. [b:Blade Song|14915175|Blade Song (Colbana Files, #1)|J.C. Daniels|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1340831600s/14915175.jpg|19164337], the first book in series, was very good for a self-published novel and I was looking forward to reading more.

[b:Night Blade|15980001|Night Blade (Colbana Files, #2)|J.C. Daniels|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1360593239s/15980001.jpg|21731909] was very improved compared to [b:Blade Song|14915175|Blade Song (Colbana Files, #1)|J.C. Daniels|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1340831600s/14915175.jpg|19164337].
- Plot was more focused.
- There is no slow start.
- All the characters I got to know are again here.
- A lot of action.
- Intriguing mystery.

One thing that really annoyed me is how the book ends. It's a big unexpected development and definitely added intense can't-put-it-down element to the book. On the other hand, I feel so sorry for all the bad things that happen.

After that ending, I had to grab [b:Broken Blade|17573932|Broken Blade (Colbana Files, #3)|J.C. Daniels|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1368630035s/17573932.jpg|24514008] right away to find out what happens next.

Well that was an emotional roller coaster! I love Kit and Damon and once again nothing is easy for them. I found myself unable to out this down until I finished it but now I gutted cause I have to wait a whole year to find out what happens. This is by far one of the best urban fantasy series out there and a must read.

DNF.

Nope. I had kind of high hopes for this series after the first book; I liked the FMC and thought the darkness and her past trauma promised some good character development. The somewhat volitile relationship had potential. I have exposed myself to some spoilers and knew he would have more assholery to make amends for, but just a couple of chapters into this book was enough to convince me that the romantic interest, who would obviously stay in the series, was not complicated but simply an abusive ass.

The straw was a scene (spoiler alert) in chapter 9 where Kit is recovering from fatal injuries after an attack and have sought the comfort and protection of her lover Damon. She explains that she is working on a secret assignment lead by an ex of hers, which she regrets but can't do anything about. His reaction? He takes a huge bite out of her neck. Without consent, without remorse, and without a care of how he both scares and hurts her. And she is at a point where she doesn't even get angry or resentful. She understands Damon's need to "mark" her.

This story includes a lot of abuse and violence, both past and present. It had the potential of being a really good survivors story. But I will not read a series where the main romantic relationship is based on abuse.

How much pain can a person handle. When it comes to Kit there seems to be no limit.
