I am struggling with what to say here. This should have been right up my alley - dark twisted fairy tales, a mirror-world, etc. But this book started slow and took me a long time to get into. And it never really took off. Some of the reviews here say that the book started in the wrong place, and I think I agree with them - the back story of discovery and exploration would have been a more compelling place to begin. As it was, we didn't have a chance to get to know these characters - or care about them - and therefore it was difficult to care. I finished it, but it was a tough slog. Disappointed.

It took me a minute to get everything figured out character/world wise and I do wish the story had gone a bit deeper, but it was a really fun and unique story with familiar bits woven throughout.

As compelling as her other stories, but slightly darker-- great for the middle school into high school crowd. Cornelia Funke knows how to make all those fairy tales from our childhood come alive in a shivery, disturbing way.

I read somewhere that this is a winter read and in New Zealand it’s currently winter. I honestly enjoyed this read .The dark element are dark not Disney dark and yet it’s littered with elements from fairytales. While a Fae Y/A book , I wouldn’t recommend it for fans of ACOTAR. They are on completely opposite sides of the fae/fantasy spectrum. The main focus  of relationships in this books is the brothers  not the periphal love interest. I also love that the illness journey was something they did as a team rather than leaving the brother to face it alone.
I do think this is a book I would  have loved in middle grade.
I really liked that the illness journey was something all the characters went on together instead of the one character needing to do it on their own.
