The second book in the Maisie Dobbs series has Maisie’s private investigation agency established with an office, and a full-time assistant, Billy Beale. She’s proven herself to Inspector Stratton of Scotland Yard as well. But when Maisie is asked to track down a missing heiress she begins to find clues that point to a connection between her case and Stratton’s murder investigation.
I like this series. Maisie is a resourceful, intelligent, assertive young woman, who listens carefully and seeks advice from her mentors. She’s also astute in noticing problems, and compassionate in helping others confront their demons. Billy is a wonderful sidekick and I like that Winspear includes some after-effects of his service in WWI (i.e. “The Great War”). This gives Maisie some additional chance to use her training in psychology. I also appreciate the growing relationship between Maisie and Stratton. I’ll keep reading this series.
Kim Hicks does a fine job of voicing the audio book. She has good pacing and is skilled at using the various dialects and accents required for this series.

there’s a lot i don’t vibe with in this series such as maisie’s whole ESP schtick at crime scenes and such from her mentor, but i’ve become intrigued by these characters and my weak spot for fun little mysteries so here we are. better mystery and characters and all in this one, but i reaaally hated it being the kind of mystery at the end that you couldn’t have solved as a reader because fundamental information was kept from you. oh well. the emotions at the end were surprisingly affecting, so props to that.

Fantastic lady detective with a background in psychology and meditation.... Um, yes, please! This is an extraordinary series and the stories just keep getting better. I'm listening to them and have loved all the readers so far, though have been disappointed that they keep changing. The story is well worth the read, though, and will make you want to start your own PI firm in London.

These books just suck you right in! I love that you learn more about Maisie and Billie in each book and they seem to grow - similar to some young adult series I've read. This isn't something I've ever found in adult series, so choose not to continue reading them. I know I'll pick up the next volume and can only hope Winspear keeps developing her characters.

Enjoyed it very much. Dealt with the destruction of those who stayed home from the war (World War I), as well as those who went.
Maisie is hired to find the missing 32-year-old daughter of a wealthy businessman. Soon she realizes that the daughter's school friends are being murdered, and that the daughter may have a very good reason for running away. The murders are rooted in the past, and Maisie also must be very careful as the police have a different suspect and a different motive than the one she suspects ...
A good read. Not too heavy, but the darkness is there in the discussion of the results of war - and the damage done to the survivors. Looking forward to more of the Maisie Dobbs series.
