This was as good as I remember it from the first read many many years ago.
I really liked the new zombie concept

As others before me have said, your expectations will probably drive how much you like this book. If you're expecting a monster mash up rewrite of Lewis Carroll's classic, you're going down the wrong rabbit whole. If you're looking for teen fic that has 'elements' (and I use the term loosely) of Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, you may be entertained. An open mind is key.
As sexist as it was in the beginning (look for a blog post about this) this book totally captured my heart. Alice is KA, Cole is super hot, and while I was a bit disappointed that it wasn't actually in Wonderland, it rocked. Must read for fans of retellings, thrillers, and zombies. (I hate zombies but this book was great- that proves something, I guess)
dark
funny
mysterious
fast-paced
This was amazing. Im unsure if this is considered a retelling or not since Alice didn't technically fall down the rabbit hole and enter a whole new world persè but I'm counting it.
I've read other Gena Showalter's stuff. I didn't really like the Evil Queen, and I found the Lord's of the underworld to be just okay but still fun. Because of that I was a bit wary starting this book, but i am so glad that I did because I loved it.
I loved Alice, she just seemed so true to herself and wanting to help people. For a 16yr old she seemed more mature than most her age, definitely more mature than Kat, (even though I loved her too)
I was a bit irritated by the grandparents and their overbearingness until I realized that they didn't know the actual situation and their concern came from a good place.
Overall, I think this was a great start to a series and a really good YA.

MORE? MORE! @ P.S. I love that book!
THE WORLD: I was surprised and rather disappointed. I expected something fancy, I mean the title in the book indicates relation to Alice in Wonderland but really there was no Wonderland in this book. Yes, we had Zombies. But not even your typical Zombies like in the movies, here Zombies live in the dark and people are unaware most of the time except for a few chosen ones that have to kill them. Also, they basically eat your soul and to fight Zombies you have to leave your body and all that weird stuff we are not costumed seeing when it comes to Zombies. So yeah, lots of high school drama and no real Zombies. I guess it is clear that I was really disappointed.
CHARACTERS: Our main character is of course Alice, she basically has to live with her parents after her family is killed by Zombies. Frankly, up till Zombies appeared this book reminded me extremely of Evermore and I really prefer Evermore in this case. I am not saying Alice is a terrible character, I just did not seem to care for her at all. And at some point she was annoying. Basically typical YA high school main character. Then what high school book without a hot guy that everybody wants but he is too mysterious and does not care about any girl? Yeah his name is Cole in this book but really Twilight much? I mean seriously, all these high school books are so the same. The only character I really loved was Kat. There was just something about her that is not that common in high school drama books. She was funny, supporting and just somebody I would also like to have as a friend. Well okay Her supposed to be boyfriend Frosty was also cool, they were the couple I was actually interested in. Also, Kat is would be the only reason I would ever pick up the next books, I would love to know what is up with her and how her development goes.
LOVE: Of course Alice and Cole is THE couple. Blah. Ain't even bother writing about them, too boring. Now Kat and Frosty...they are crazy. But you are going to take my word for it because if I spoil then this book loses its appeal completely.
PLUS: Kat.
MINUS: What is this thing with leaving your body to fight Zombies? And Zombies eating your soul? What? I am still confused. Also the ending, WTH?
OVERALL: I was blown away how different this book was from what I expected. Also, I am really glad I did not buy a paperback of it. It was okaying but I do not read high school drama so I will not be continuing with the series. This is not a book for Zombie fans for sure.

This is a book I really liked, more than I expected. Probably because I completely miss judged what the book was going to be about. I thought this was going to be a dark book about zombies in some scary wonderland setting. Instead I got a love story with some zombies thrown in to scare you a little. So for me the fan of a love story not so much a zombie story this book was perfect. The added bonus is I really liked the main characters Alice and Cole, Their attraction seemed real and I'm curious to see where this relationship goes. I also like the explanation of zombies,, How they work, how they are created, because I am a zombie virgin. I'm thinking this book is perfect for someone like me, not somebody who is a big fan of zombies. I like this book and I have to definitely be picking up the next book in the series.
I feel like I should give you some warning. So many people seem to be mad that this book wasn't what they were expecting. If you are expecting it to be some dark, twisted, grotesque form of Alice In Wonderland you will be disappointed. Expecting it to be such will just ruin it for you. In fact there aren't a ton of things that are even closely related to Alice in Wonderland aside from some subtle references. To really enjoy the book for what it is you should go into it with an open mind with no intentions of comparing it to the zombies you think you know and just enjoy the ride Gena Showalter takes you on.
Having said that let me say how much I seriously LOVE this book! It's about Alice who comes head to head with the reality of real life zombies (who doesn't love zombies?) after the tragic death of her family and how she learns to fight said zombies (total badass BTW). There are some definite teary eyed moments which you would expect when the book starts off with tragedy but there also laugh your head off experiences that totally make up for it (not that I minded crying). The book never leaves you feeling bored instead you're caught up in the action constantly wondering what we will discover next and wondering when Cole will realize he can't live without Alice?!
I love all of the characters in this book (except for the obvious bad guys) but Kat is my most favorite. She is actually my favorite best friend character that I have ever read! She's just so energetic and sassy, I need her in my life every day! I was saddened at a discovery we make about two thirds through the book and I really hope Gena comes up with a way to make it all okay in the next book. Lets just say I will be sad if something bad happens. (I know that was a very mysterious couple of sentences but I hate spoilers) Then there is Cole. Breath taking, blood pressure raising, swoon inducing Cole. He is constantly giving me the warm fuzzies while also making my blood boil. I think he is good for Alice though and I enjoy how easily she stands up to him, even if on the inside she just wants to give in, at least she puts on a good front. There are a few heated make out sessions but mostly there is a bunch of sexual tension between Cole and Alice. I love sexual tension. Through becoming friends with Kat and meeting Cole & company; Alice comes to terms with the death of her family and finds purpose in her life. And what would a book about zombies be without some zombie slaying? So yeah there is some of that too without it being horribly graphic and gross. Hot boys, good friends, zombie slayings? What more could you ask for?
The end of the book was a nice wrap up, not leaving you dying in suspense but at the same time subtly hinting at bad things to come. In just a couple of days the second installment to this series comes out and I'm so excited by that fact. I feel like I need to be bossy now and demand you go out and buy Alice in Zombieland. While you're at it go ahead and preorder Through The Zombie Glass. Trust me in this, you're going to want it.

Great book but not really an Alice in Wonderland retelling.
REREAD: I read this book in 2015, and now I’ve just read it in 2018 and honestly I still love it just as much. It’s angsty, Cole is a MEGA bad boy, and there were honestly some parts that were worth rolling my eyes at (all the animalistic metaphors that came with Cole’s character, for one). But this is definitely a steamy guilty read, and one that I’ll always have some major nostalgia for! If you want a romance that gives you ALL the feels, and some zombie slaying action to go along with it, read this!!
