3.77 AVERAGE

Sarah Dewhurst and her father, outcasts in their little town of Frome, Washington, are forced to hire a dragon to work their farm, something only the poorest of the poor ever have to resort to.
The dragon, Kazimir, has more to him than meets the eye, though. Sarah can’t help but be curious about him, an animal who supposedly doesn’t have a soul, but who is seemingly intent on keeping her safe.
Because the dragon knows something she doesn’t. He has arrived at the farm with a prophecy on his mind. A prophecy that involves a deadly assassin, a cult of dragon worshippers, two FBI agents in hot pursuit—and somehow, Sarah Dewhurst herself.

Wow, what a roller-coaster of a book. A mixture of war story, politics and love with dragons thrown in... Although there's a fairly large cast of characters they're beautifully drawn and you're sucked into their lives with just a few sentences. The story is exciting but also leaves you with lingering questions about humanity, love and the existence of other worlds outside our own. Fascinating!

Patrick Ness does it again with a weird, unique, and exciting story that had so much character and charm. This book was nothing like what I expected, and I think it made it better that I knew very little about the plot when I started reading it. I loved the fast paced plot progression, the characters, and the multiple points of view that built this interesting world!

Sarah Dewhurst’s life was forever changed when a mysterious blue dragon came to work on her fathers modest farm (don’t worry, it gets better and weirder from here). Patrick Ness is a masterful author who never fails to shock, intrigue, and reel me in for more! I mean who doesn’t like a good dragon story?!

Cold War tensions? Queer longing? Small-town secrets and forbidden love? Dragons? The multiverse?
As Elaine Benes would say... “get OUT!” (accompanied by a shove)
I slept on Burn for way too long, but as soon as I finally started reading it I knew I’d hit the jackpot. Learn from my mistake.

Man I love dragons. I loved this! I loved the characters and I really enjoyed all of the twists and turns. I also loved the way the prophecy ended. This was just a super fun and enjoyable read for me.

Burn by Patrick Ness
⁣★★★★☆

“I'm just a girl."
"It is tragic how well you have been taught to say that with sadness rather than triumph.”

“Sarah felt that any world that needed this many lessons must have something deeply wrong with it.”

“Sometimes you just have to feel bad about a thing. Sometimes that's the only thing that makes you human.”

4 stars - I really liked it!

This book basically explores the question: what if everyday life was normal, except we had dragons?? And it was just fine and people lived with it?

This was such an interesting, yet odd concept to read about. Part of what I love about Patrick Ness' work is that it is odd and unique, and he brings strange concepts to life that I never would have thought about before. His writing is beautiful, and he manages to turn even the most unrealistic combinations of ideas into an expertly crafted story.

This book was basically like reading a dream. Everything about it just felt like one major juxtaposition, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was fast paced, unpredictable and had such good representation! Some of the scenes in this book genuinely scared me, or made me so shocked I put the book down and gasped out loud. That's how good Ness' writing is.

Despite this, I would probably have liked a little more world building at the start, because I feel like we got to the action straight away. But nevertheless, this book is a perfect example of how powerful Ness' writing is.

DID NOT FINISH: 0%

I don't really like alternative history, 1950s settings, or political thrillers about the cold war. I didn't realize all of that was included when I read the synopsis.

I really don't like the characters, don't like the way things progress. Every new plot element just made me groan.

I liked it, but it feels unfinished.

2.5 stars

I read this for the 2024 PopSugar reading challenge category of "a book that features dragons" and this does, in fact, feature dragons. A fellow book club member said it best "it was an interesting premise, but just fell flat". I don't love or hate it, it's just a middle of the road read for me. It was an easy read & when I had time to read, I got through it fast, but I didn't connect with or have any real emotional attachment to any of the characters (of which, there are many).

It felt a bit like a cross between The Matrix (different realities/worlds) and Constantine with the "Spur of the Goddess" standing in for the Spear of Destiny. Oh and let's add dragons. The only character I really liked was Grace and she didn't show up until the 2nd half of the book. This worked for my Popsugar prompt, but it's certainly not something I'm going to re-read.
