The Younger Wife

Sally Hepworth

3.65 AVERAGE

A fun romp that's not so much a whodunit but a whydunnit. Story told from the POV of the younger wife and the two sisters who are surprised at their father's desire to marry again, especially as he's still married to his first wife, who is in a nursing home with dementia. The three characters are interesting and well rounded.

I have read one other book by Sally Hepworth and I absolutely loved it. The Younger Wife was not as strong of a read for me but I still enjoyed it. Rachel and Tully are floored when their father announces that he is engaged to a much younger woman. They are shocked by this seeing as how he is still married to their mother who has been suffering from dementia. However, he explains that he is going to divorce her to marry Heather. As the reader we know from the first chapter that something happens at their wedding and we then flash to the months leading up. Told from POV of the daughters, Heather, and aan unknown wedding attendant we begin to see that something is not right in the family. I really enjoyed the writing and the two sisters immensely. It seemed as though Tully and Rachel were here in my living room as I was reading. The reason it is not getting five stars is because it was very obvious to me what was happening. At no point did I falter in my thinking. I am not sure if as the reader we were supposed to know so soon but I like more twists and turns in my thrillers. I will be reading more from the author because her writing is fantastic as well as her character building.

I don’t get what the first wife had to do with every other character. Good story minus some unfinished plot points

Okay as a light read that you don't have to think about too much. The ending felt like it was all meant to be wrapped up neatly but it left me with questions and an unsettled feeling that left me unhappy overall.

Rachel and Tully's father, Stephen, is getting married again, to a woman younger than them. Heather seems nice enough, but Stephen is still married to their mother, Pam. Granted, Pam has dementia and can't even remember her own children, but still. Stephen is a prominent doctor and wealthy, well liked by everyone. Heather is definitely benefitting from the marriage.
While going through her mother's things, Rachel finds a hot water bottle with thousands of dollars and a note. Where did her mother get so much money? Why did she have it hidden? Pam isn't the only one with secrets. Rachel, Tully, Heather, and Stephen all have their own as well.
Sally Hepworth has always been one of my favorite authors. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love the character development, we learn so much about each person. I wasn't thrilled with the ending, but it wasn't horrible, just a bit anticlimactic. The book does touch on some serious subjects but I didn't feel it did justice to them all.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
