3.5 stars. I am still trying to figure out how to rate this book. It is different. The construction is layered and spirals a bit. Time and perspective jump around. It is realistic and harsh. It tells about a time right before the gold rush, at the beginning of the trans-pacific railroad track being laid.

So many questions come up through this story. Who does the land belong to? What makes a home? There are so many issues that are unusual for a history/western- gender, sexual identity, stories of Native American genocide, sibling connection, etc.
This book depicted the harshness and racism of the American west. It was an interesting read.

I think this would be a good book club selection as I really wish I had a reason to analyze some of the construction and language more closely. I think this book would improve for me if I was able to discuss it. In any event, I appreciate how different and original it was. It was worth reading.

To be honest I almost quit reading this book at about 100 pages but decided to push through. I am glad I did. It was slow and confusing at the beginning but picked up for me around part 3.
