This spy novel set in London during the war is OK, but not great. The first half is well-plotted, well-written, with good characters. But it loses its way badly after halfway, and the ending is very limp.

I was distinctly underwhelmed by this. Not that there was anything wrong with it, really; it just singularly failed to inspire me. I kept waiting for it to change pace, for some semblance of tension to mount but it never did.

An interesting tale but just a story for me. I didn’t really feel too much for the characters and it just sort of came to a sudden end, which, ok, it had to.

If you like a plucky wartime heroine, and I do, you can’t go wrong with an Anthony Quinn novel. Amy Strallen isn’t the most consistent character - one minute she’s capable of faultless dissembling, the next she’s being taken in by someone who’s never heard of the WAAF - but she has a tinge of bitterness that I enjoyed. She’s the centre of a rather far-fetched tale of espionage during the Blitz that, if you don’t take it too seriously, is a great little read.
