Another English Literature book so prepare for this to be updated after I've examined the shite out of it.
First read round though, I liked it. I liked the set up mixing present and memories, it was well integrated, even the fact it wasn't in chronological order didn't cause any confusion around the story. If you've seen the movie the book will feel familiar, but as usual, be prepared to think of them as separate entities; the novel brings in so much more than the movie, far more twists and turns and complications than the blockbuster leads you to believe. Like the movie though, there is a particular sense of happy ending about it, the retrospective nature of the book softens the tension, you know he does end up safe and winning the game because he's telling the story. Recommended, enjoyed, I'm sure I'll find some criticisms of it to post soon.

the rare occasion when the movie is ten times better than the book. I like the way the story is structured, back and forth between anecdotes from the main character’s life and how it relates to the questions he answers on the game shows…but not much else is that great. almost every chapter is some variation of abuse/murder/rape and awful stereotypes about Indian people, and the narration is a bit jumpy and doesn’t sound like a cohesive story about his life overall. it also ends so abruptly? like “this happened, then this and then this, okay the end.” ugh! a big letdown.

I like the plot very much - it's so interesting and talks through many important subjects while being so unpredictable which I love in books.
The only thing I didn't like while reading this book is that the chapters jump around on the timeline. It's understandable considering that each chapter is technically a short story and they have to jump around for the plot to work perfectly. I just didn't like it as it got me a little confused as to where I was in the life of Ram.
Very enjoyable story in general.

What a wonderful read (well, listen) this was.
Ram Emanuel Thomas is the unlikely name given to an abandoned baby boy. Ram's young life is a series of almost tragic events as he finds his way from one precarious living situation to another. Still, like a sponge, he soaks in the arcane stories he hears from the people he encounters.
This eclectic jumble of cultural and historical knowledge serves him well on the big amazing TV game show Who Will Win a Billion, but the authorities don't believe that this poor orphan boy could win the top prize without cheating.
Ram tells the stories of his life to a lawyer, and we learn, one quiz question at a time how this poor orphan boy wins the biggest prize in India TV history!

I love the concept of this and think it was so well-done. The tone was slightly more light than I was expecting it to be - parts of it came across as quite farcical despite being about really serious or sad subjects, but I think that made it more enjoyable to read. I remember really enjoying the ending.
The movie “Slumdog Millionaire” is loosely based on this book. I found the two to be very different experiences and stories. Ram Mohammad Thomas comes to a life through a series of stories depicting his life as an orphan in India. As his story progresses the reader is introduced to a colorful array of characters including an Australian conspiracy theorist, a ruthless hit man, and an aging actress who cannot let go of her former glory. From the grandeur of the Taj Mahal to the horrors of a home for orphans, Q&A is an unforgettable ride through the life of a transient orphan in a country rich with history and culture.

i loved this book. I have heard so much about the movie that I thought I should read the book before watching the film--since books and films often have just a passing resemblance to each other. Ram Mohammad Thomas is arrested, jailed, and tortured after correctly winning the grand prize on Who Will Win a Billion. The producers obviously don't want to pay and, instead, accuse Ram of fraud and cheating. Ram tells his life story to his attorney and demonstrates that even though he never went to school, he could answer the questions based on his life's experiences. A wonderful story about life in the lower classes of Indian society.
