The book that Slumdog Billionaire is based on - good tale of how a kid from the slums in Mumbai becomes a billionaire on a quiz show - slightly darker than the movie which has had a Bollywood sheen added to it, but an equally good story and a peek into another world. Not a long book and an engaging story with some good twists.

Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? It's based on this book. I don't remember much about the movie, but the book is basically a bunch of fictional short stories about Ram Mohammed Thomas's young life, and how those stories helped this uneducated boy to answer questions on the quiz show. I thought the storytelling was just ok, certainly not amazing writing, but I did love the ending.

So I liked this book. It kept me interested, was unlike what I normally read, didn't get bogged down in the romance. All pluses. But overall, it just didn't rivet me. And then there was-- SPOILER!

Spoiler!

Still here?

Ok, so it was like "here's all these horrible, life altering things that happened in my life--poverty, people committing suicide, people being murdered, people dying horrible death by rabies--and now I've won the money and everything is magically beautiful and works out perfectly and I'm just going to shove it all in like 2 pages because I can't actually leave any ambiguity or face actually giving it a real ending."

AAAARG! that's all I get? Seriously? A fucking "Here's where they are now!" wrap up? Dissapointing.

What a sweet, sweet book. The movie Slumdog Millionaire is very loosely based on this. The movie borrowed the shell of the story, but changed most of the details. If, however, you enjoyed the movie, you will equally enjoy this book. It was just as fun to read as it was to watch.

Similar, yet different from the movie, I enjoyed the extra details and characters.
