‘If anyone was going to turn out to be a murderer, my money was on you’
-
Too early for a Christmas read!? NOOO NEVER! And what a wonderfully Christmassy whodunnit to start me off!
-
The story begins on a Christmas Eve night in Westbury Manor, the inhabitants are preparing for their guests and a few days of merriment ahead... little do they know that they will wake up with a dead body on their snowy lawn! The race is in for our amateur detective ‘Hugh’ to solve this murder and restore festivity to this Christmas celebration

Murder Most Festive has a genuinely interesting murder mystery and the reveal when it comes makes perfect sense. I also quite like the main character who becomes an amateur detective investigating the crime.

Unfortunately the execution of the story didn't love up to the promise. I disliked the overly knowing writing style from early on, and the plot wasn't handled as skillfully as I would have liked. Too much relies on an inept and uninterested police officer, clues appearing without any formal investigation or interviews, and the murderer giving up and confessing as soon as it was clear the main character believed them guilty.

I don't dislike the book, it's just very middle of the road. If you're looking for an easy-to-read Christmas mystery though, this does fit the bill.
