Ok folks here's the thing, this book is not deep (I'm talking almost children's book shallow) but it is whimsical af and a pinch sinister and I love sinister whimsy. I'm gonna go with a 4/5 bc I was amused start to finish and tbh it was a nice change of pace and I plan on continuing the series.

if the ending wasn't so rushed in my opinion i think i would have enjoyed the book a bit more than i did because i enjoyed the first two thirds of the book but then the last third was just a rat race to explain everything which was just not well written to me

There is so much hype around this book, and I had just finished the OUABH series when I picked it up. It was good, but it wasn't a stellar start to the series. The characters felt particularly flat and bland, following a very predetermined path of choices despite the story claiming them to be totally out of the blue. A lot of questions went unanswered for the sake of mystery (?) and ease of narration (?). There's an incredibly important plot line about their grandmother that never gets expounded upon despite revealing its supposed importance multiple times. The relationship between "Tella" and "Scar" is rarely shown positively. I also cannot with their nicknames for each other. Scar reminds me of the Lion King too much lol.

I did immediately start reading Legendary (which I am enjoying much more) and still have hope that the series is better than Caraval on its own. Stay tuned.
