Neither the cover, nor the description of this book really spoke to me, so I probably wouldn't have picked it up. However, it was on sale for cheap and because I saw the audiobook was narrated by Tom Hanks, I decided to "risk" it. Is was a great decision.

Of course, Tom Hanks is great. Turns out having Tom Hanks read you a book is exactly as delightful as you think it will, which is to say extremely.

The book itself is also pretty great. It's hard to say what makes it so good, it just is. It reminds me in that way of Stoner John Edward Williams, though this one has a bit of a bigger scope. The ending was not quite what I wanted, but perhaps what the book needed.

Interesting and the idea of the house being like a central character felt a little bit different. Definitely an examination of just how messy humans and families can be.

I couldn't predict where this book was going the entire time. Just when I thought I had it figured out it changed. I would emphatically say that Mauve was the entire reason I read it. From the frost chapter, and for the whole book she was the only character I liked in the least, but I feel like that's intentional from the author. On a large scale this book is about parentification, family dynamics and trauma. But on a small scale it's about how close siblings can be in a chaotic world. And for that I lived it. Even if the actual plot wasn't to my taste.
