I guess I have to say this novel didn't fail, but I'm not a fan. It kept my interest throughout most of the story--wanting to know what really happened to Antoinette. But, it fell apart at the end--Kayla may have agreed to not share her information about Antoinette with her son, but it was impossible to have kept the info secret and out of the media. Theo would find out. And then what? From a poorly established bond of friendship, to Kayla's encounter with Antoinette, then the wrap-up with her friend Val, the ending was unrealistic and made Kayla's "wonderings" in the last paragraph unnecessary. A quick, but frustrating, read.
What I liked about this book was the fast pace. The twists came hard and fast. What I disliked was the betrayal of the 3 friends. It ruined it for me and the ending totally sucked lemons.
3.5. This was enjoyable enough to finish, but not nearly as good as her more recent books. I didn’t think there was enough closure at the end.
Hard to believe there are people out there like these characters. Compelling, but what a bunch of liars and cheaters who were supposed to be "friends".
Overwrought
Val is so contemptible that she is unbelievable.
We are bombarded with so much that it becomes completely impossible to feel anything for these characters. It is all too much. I think I'm done for with this author.
I'm so angry at myself. Went all the way to the end and the ending was worse than the whole. I wish I had stopped reading when I realized the absurd level theat they were taking the melodrama to.
Theo's behavior towards his parents makes no real sense, why is he so angry with his parents? Why all the destructive behavior.
Why would Kayla be so forgiving of a friend that took such horrible advantage of her young son? The picture that Theo loves, where Antoinette is holding him, as a baby, gives me the creeps. Ugh.
I am angry at myself for finishing this book, it has absolutely no redeeming qualities. Ugh it is truly a wall anger, I would throw it if it wasn't a borrowed book.

I usually love Elin Hilderbrand’s books but this one unsatisfying. While there were some twists and turns, which kept me reading; the characters were not very likeable and the ending was quite disappointing. It seemed rushed and left more questions than answers.
super good writing but a really rushed and unsatisfying ending
Picked this up as a mood-setter for an upcoming trip to Nantucket - over 20 years old and still a cute, easy read. Not amazing, but not bad.
