In another time and place, probably a solid 4+. I'm not in a heavy mood right now, and this book was very heavy at times. I admittedly skim read some battles. Overall the book was very informative; written in a wonderful, engaging narrative style this author excels at; and emotional.

Important WWII history focusing on the experiences of both Japanese American civilians and soldiers (including those who served in the 442nd Nisei combat unit which saved the "Lost Battalion" of Texas while surrounded by German forces in the Vosges mountains in Eastern France). Meticulously researched. Brown's descriptions of battle were another reminder of the hell that war always is -- the loss of life and horrors of combat are impossible to truly comprehend. I had a hard time keeping track of the many storylines and characters whose lives were profiled throughout the text.

I think I didn't know what this was actually about, but I mean it was still good. But just not what I was expecting. Maybe a bit too many details for my taste. But still good.

This book is excellent! I have read many books on WWII, and this one is certainly the best! It is so well-written! It is never dull. It alternates between characters, between war exploits, between Japanese American war activists at home, between Hawaiian Japanese Americans and mainland Japanese Americans. It includes a bit of back-history on many of the places mentioned in addition to what was happening during the war, especially in Hawaii, Italy and France. This book is an absolute jewel, and so full of information! The reader is also excellent! I will be listening again!
