I was expecting that this book is about the explanation of Fermat's Last Theorem proof. It is not. It is more like the journey of mathematicians through centuries trying to solve this problem.

But to be honest. If this book is all about the proof, I will definitely can't follow. The math must be beyond my limit. So I am grateful the author chooses to put the story this way. I really love to learn the history of math. Things that are missing from my past education background. Would definitely read books like this.

Given the fact that I like both history and maths, this was pretty interesting. It didn't really inspire a further interest in the history of maths— this is more or less as much as I would ever want to know. Pretty well-written too.

8/10

I went into this book with tempered expectations- I mean, how interesting can solving an equation be? Turns out: very. With 350 years of history, Fermat's Last Theorem has a lot to talk about. It's honestly a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, with a great climax surrounding Andrew Wiles, who spent 7 years in secret tackling the problem before finally toppling it.

I hope there's other pop math books as good as this, but I won't get my hopes up.

Excellent work of popular mathematics. Singh manages the difficult task of explaining one of the most famous and complicated theorems in history in clear and lucid prose. He neither patronises his audience or dumbs down, and somehow manages to make number theory (mostly) clear even to someone like me, who has long since forgotten everything that Further Calculus ever taught her. If you've got even the most glancing interest in the subject, this is well worth a read.

An thriller about the history of mathematics and the search for an answer of a three hundred years old riddle. Written in a way which makes mathematics approachable and interesting. I wish my math teachers would have brought up new math problems in a way like it is in this book.
