this book was the first in months to hold my interest long enough until finishing it without cheating on it with others! i really loved Lucia's blossoming as a lesbian and enjoyed the sweet and intense sapphic romance
the plot is good and has your wonderful fantastical quests and it also explores the effects and trauma that emotional and physical abuse leave in the context of family and hierarchical expectations.
i will only say that some of the key events that went on (e.g. the murder, reuniting with someone, Siphon) felt underdeveloped at times because they were introduced but not detailed heavily up until we see a lack of resolution in the last fourth of the book
i found the characters lovable and enjoyed Raelynn's overall writing and i WILL be reading the rest of the series

This book frustrates me because the foundation for a really great story is there. The author has a clear vision for an interesting world of Mystics run by witches, werewolves, and vampires. However, this is a fantasy story the does a lot of “telling” often in really stereotypical forms like visions, memories, or journal pages. There is less “showing” which really hampers the pace of the book. The dialogue often comes across really unnatural and monologue-like a points. Character wise, there are definitely some to root for including two of the major love interests but with a very unfulfilling cliffhanger at the end, I doubt I’ll be back for more.
