Michael Koryta's most recent release is a page turner.
It has a tragic hero in the guise of an FBI agent, a heroin addict turned murder witness and many more somewhat redeeming characters residing in Maine.
While there were some proverbial holes in the narrative, this book was a page turning way to spend a few evenings.
Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read this book.

The underlying crime/mystery of this book is nothing particularly unique, but the way the story is told was entertaining and felt fresh. Can’t say much more without spoilers but I thought this was a well done, worthwhile read! Solid 4 stars.
I had such high hopes for this book in the beginning. I love the idea of a confession in the beginning and having to work your way backwards. However, How It Happened became a drag to get through. Never one to give up (and because I was still invested in the plot) I carried on. How It Happened was too long in some parts, too short in others. The second half of the book felt like a whole other novel. I didn't find myself cheering on any of the characters, the plot became very repetitive. And the ending was very lackluster!
You cant win them all, and unfortunately this one was last to the line.

a complex mystery that was at times a little hard to follow, but then i did it as an audio in the car.
I really enjoy Michael Koryta's writing style and this book was quick paced. It follows and FBI agent immediately following a confession regarding two missing presumed murdered teenagers. The premise was really intriguing as the confession leads to bodies but not where they were supposed to be or killed how the confession stated.
So the question is why would someone confess to a crime but give all of the wrong details in such a believable way? The answer to this kept me guessing right until the end and I found the conclusion so satisfying.
I thought the narrative style and the way the story unfolded was similar to True Detective and I really enjoyed the guessing of it all. The small town fishing element was something that I haven't read a lot about before and although it wasn't a major part of this storyline it was intriguing and added to the background of the characters and storyline in an interesting way.

3.5 stars. Was a decent read, not my favorite of his books but it was good.
Engaging page turner, but a little light on specifics. You really have to pay attention to the implications here. Excellent plotting, pacing, characters, dialog; all the important stuff.
