I hated this book so much. Dnf at 84% after skimming most of it. The FMC became so annoying, selfish and childish. It was also written like you could read it as a standalone retelling a lot of the past book, but it’s the third book in trilogy so it’s weird and boring and unnecessary. The romantic relationship sucked, and there was a lot of weird filler stuff. Just annoying

WHEW. Ok... So, this book started off not my favorite. That being said, the series overall was a lot of fun. Vivian was a mess of a character (in the best way). The side characters were great too. I also thought the villains were generally interesting as well with their complications. It made for an interesting journey. I know the author is continuing this universe with Xander and Miranda and I'm definitely excited for that because his brief role in this book set it up great and I want more.

Vivian and Grim are in relationship woes. Grim has made multiple confessions of love for Viv but she can't verbally return the sentiment due to her past traumas and fears of losing herself as a result. On top of that, they're no closer to fulfilling Vivian's charge to figure out who is upsetting the balance. When attempts are made on Grim's life, Vivian begin to spiral with her own feelings and attempts to focus on their mission more than ever. She recruits her hacker contact again for help to find the Blade of Bane, one of only two (that she's aware of) ways to kill a god besides herself. Together, along with Miranda who is charged as a keeper to the blade, they're able to locate and retrieve it but not before Grim is tricked into eating dead flesh. It turns out that each god also has a 3rd way that they can be killed that is specific to their own gifts and Galina/Bast figured out how to kill Grim. Vivian arrives just in time to watch him die and for Galina to reveal she did it to rescue her sister, the Original sekhor/vampire: Sekhemet. Reunited, Galina and Sekhemet create and control humans they have turned using them as an army. They begin to trap gods not willing to jump on their bandwagon and it comes down to Viv, Miranda, and a certain barista to work together and bring Grim back. They discover that a god-gone-mad, Xander, is kept below the casino and she bargains with him for the location of Grim. Upon resurrection, his powers are too pure and he has to fight for stability. They fight against Galina and Sekhmet and win but, during the battle, Galina succeeds in mortality wounding Viv with the Blade of Bane. To save her, Grim compels her to drink from him to the point where their bond is permanently dissolved and she ascends to a god herself with the abundance of power from his resurrection. They win the day and immediately have to face Osiris who charges her as a shepherd to the vampires complementary to Grim's charge as shepherd to souls. They get married and cue the HEA. We also get a sneak peak into the continuation that will follow Xander and Miranda.Series Overall: 4.4/5

Spoiler
I found the daisy-pulling "I love you; I don't love you" bit boring.Spoiler
Galina just wanted to love and live beside her sister. Idris wanted to protect his mother from the mistreatment she endured. Even Sekhmet just wanted to rest and be at peace.
Series Review!
