I really enjoyed this debut fantasy adventure based on Mexican legends/folklore. Even though it's about 400 pages, it reads quickly. The story is fascinating and the characters are likeable enough. The characters lack some depth and feel a bit caricature and the plot was a little predictable but it's a fun read and I look forward to Book 2.

When I first read the synopsis what first came to mind was the Hunger Games meets Aztec mythology.
Alcalan and Metzli have been preparaing for the tournament of heirs all their lives. They each have skills they excell at. These skills and strategies must put them ahead of the other heirs from the five other houses. They must defend their right to rule the kigdom, just like their father did years ago.
This action packed book also had romance subplots. These aspects really added to the plot and made the characters appeal more to the reader. There were feelings and love at stake, not just their lives.
This new adult fantasy is definitely a slow burn read, which I was not expecting, but I really enjoyed the character/world building.

🇲🇽Terminé recientemente The tournament of heirs de la autora Amilea Perez.
🇺🇲 I just finished The Tournament of Heirs by author Amilea Perez. The first time I heard about this book, it was described as The Hunger Games, but in the time of the Mexica Empire.
This tournament takes place every 25 years and was imposed by the gods as a punishment for humans. In this tournament, the 6 main houses must choose two of their heirs to enter a pyramid and fight to death. The last heirs of a single house that survive will reign over Mexica until the next tournament.
I really liked the relationship between the protagonists, Metztli and Acalan, the heirs of the House of Life. The love between the members of that family seemed genuine. The story has a good pace and doesn't feel long despite having just over 500 pages, I really enjoyed it.
My least favorite part was that there are some expressions that feel very modern or belong to the culture that we know, but it wouldn't make sense for the Mexican to know it. It took me a bit out of the story, but I kept reading and ended up enjoying it.
There's action, prophecies, and a bit of romance. If you want to read a fantasy book inspired by Mexica mythology with THG vibes, give this first book in the Mexica Chronicles series a chance.

Thank you to @hearourvoices and the author for my ARC.

Let it be known that this is one of the strongest debuts I’ve ever read! I love that it’s a complete, lush world built without European/Western fantasy elements and a rich well of Aztec culture and lore.
The characters are written with a healthy dose of heart and by the middle of the book you feel as though Metzli and Acalan are your friends. I loved their sibling relationship and the fierce sense of loyalty they have to each other and how they navigate the treachery faced during the tournament. There were times where I felt the exposition of the book may have been longer than necessary but upon finishing the book, I realized that the extra world-building and relationship-building between characters was absolutely necessary, so the longer exposition was justified.
If you love stabby (like, extremely trigger happy) FMCs, wholesome and nerdy MMCs, and lush pre-colonial Aztec lore and settings with EXTREMELY high stakes I highly recommend The Tournament of Heirs!!

The Sunbearer Trials meets The Hunger Games!!
That is The Tournament Of Heirs!!
This debut novel is a big one! At over 500 pages, I was definitely intimidated before beginning. But the synopsis drew me right in and I tore through it in two days!! The first half of the book was definitely slower paced but I enjoyed the setup to all the action. And once the actual tournament started I couldn't put it down!
With many Hunger Game similarities, I can see this being loved by fantasy and dystopian book lovers! I loved and connected with the Aztec mythology and Nahuatl language sprinkled throughout. And the Spotify playlist that the author provided heightened the reading experience!
Check this one out today! You'll be rooting for my girl Metztli and her brother Acalan!!
