This is one of Morrison's more difficult reads. It's small but it carries. I saw several "mercies" reflected throughout, each layered with meaning. There is also always that characteristic weirdness that Morrison brings to her stories. These characters are complex and absorbing -- an interesting intersection of Black, white, mixed race and Native in Colonial America. Writing is beautiful and evocative with detailed references to various wings of Christianity during this period.

A petite, but packed novel. Not necessarily my favorite Morrison (which is to say it's still head and shoulders among many other novels). Even though it's short, it has such interesting prose, style, and a density to it that I feel as though it may warrant a re-read in the not-to-distant future.

Fantastic. Different POVs of same events very powerful at exposing the web of racism, violence, and misogyny that traps/controls/enables the characters
