This is the third book in the Emperyan series which I believe is picked up for 5 books. I greatly enjoyed the world building and felt like this book was better written than the second book which I found to be repetitive. Some parts feel blatant while others feel unnecessarily obscure. I found a few of the reveals to be let downs, but I believe it’s because we mostly follow a single POV. The book is still a gripping fantasy read despite some of my frustrations.

Probably my favorite book of the series thus far! Definitely loved the world building so much more and felt very grounded in the story and narrative. I’m really looking forward to book 4.

This was my least favourite of the series so far. I still enjoyed it but it felt a lot more high fantasy than the other two, which isn’t my typical reading choices. I found the politics quite difficult to wrap my head around and couldn’t keep up with the different characters/locations they’ve added in this one.

Despite that, it was still engaging and I still loved some of the interactions between the characters. I fell in love with Ridoc’s character in this book! He made me laugh so much and I loved seeing a new side to him outside of his usual clown behaviour. Seeing him be protective and assertive was really refreshing

Ms Yarros, I would like to have a word with you about that last chapter.

I like how in the chapter
where Andarna chooses to go with Lushan, or however you spell the name of the Eid dragon, you can hear the narrator almost choke with tears from reading Violet's despair of losing one of her dragons. 😭
I wonder if that happened in the recording booth. Quite the acting!

a shameless 5 stars. im well aware that this series doesnt exactly have the best rep but fuck it. if it's trash then call me a fucking raccoon because i'm eating this shit up and this book just reminded me why i love to do that.

i felt drained after reading, both in a positive and negative way, so im basically just gonna copy and paste the same initial thoughts i've said to anyone who asked since i finished: it was so much more entertaining and exhilarating than iron flame, yet still as harrowing and emotional with a mind fuck of an ending. it fixed every issue i had with IF: the characters and their relationships, the pacing and the expanded lore and worldbuilding, all were written better and actually worth getting invested in this time around. i think this definitely revived my love for the series as a whole, and though i always value not pressuring authors to write faster and giving them time to cook on their own pace, i think taking a bit of a break before writing and releasing book 4 is nasty work because what exactly am i supposed to do in the meantime after all that. what the fuck, rebecca.
