I can not mention this enough: This Series is a Masterpiece in every possible way.
Onyx Storms starts off right, where Iron flame ended. I do highly recommend a full reread, as I did myself. I did not got confused as much at the beginning, as many others who did not reread or have read this Series a long time ago. Rebecca Yarrows throws us right back to the story in FULL impact. It's fast paced and the story turns and twists in an addicting kind of way. If you do not do a reread you will have a hard time at the beginning BUT it'll all add up along with the story- so don't worry if you do not want to reread.
The main Themes are definitely Love & Redemption, Personal Growth & Healing, Sacrifice & Loyalty, Power & Control, Consequences of the Past. The whole story is just very emotional and engaging in every way !

There are some people saying, the middle part of this book tends to be more slow and might feel like a gap filler but I strongly disagree and by the time you get to the end you will realize how important the middle part of this book is. There are soooo many clues, hints and given Information that will be needed for the upcoming Plot. Also we learn so much more about our characters: background information, growth and it's getting emotional and intense. This Book will answer many questions you had after the first two books but it will also leave you with many more after you finish !
BTW: the Banter and tension in this Book is 10/10.

Again I am struck with awe at how incredibly thought-through this whole Series is. Everything fits so well together and the Plot and Twists  just got so muh bigger than I ever could have imagined !
I am invested, obsessed and totally in love with the empyrean Series and can't wait for the next book.

Onyx Storm brought better pacing than Iron Flame, but only by a feather.

It seems to be a trend with Yarros that her books finally develop their momentum about three quarters of the way through. I think that is a sign of a rushed editing process, and an author that perhaps shouldn’t have committed to a five book series from the outset.

The changing POVs in the last 100 pages was so jarring, I almost DNF’d right there. If you’re gonna to multi-POV, commit to it from the outset! If we hadn’t spent so much time in the middle of the book, we might have had enough word count to better approach the chapters where Yarros felt the need to go to other POVs.

The saving grace of the entire series? Ridoc and Andarna are literally the best and I would die for them.

Now that we’re past the middle book, hopefully there will be better pacing and some of the gaps in the story and lore can be properly addressed.

As someone with EDS this series will always have a special place in my heart. While I found the ending of the previous book to be incredibly frustrating, I do like the direction this book took. However, I feel like some of the plot points are a little too predictable at times. Overall it was an enjoyable read, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the future.

Holy. I just finished MINUTES ago and knew I had to write about it. The last few chapters have me REELING so hard I can’t even think of anything else right now. This book started a little slow, and a bit confusing, but it quickly turned into a nail biter and I was inhaling the pages. I haven’t read a book in less than a month in a while, and I finished this one within two weeks. Yarros has a writing style that immediately pulls you into the characters and plot so that when you’re reading, it’s as if you’re there in the scene rather than viewing it. She has combined so many different storylines, dropping subtle hints and foreshadowing for problems and events to come and I am so excited for the next book in the series. Now to wait two years! I love all the characters in this series, and love how each one is unique and has their own struggles and flaws, making them more human. Second squad is so much like a family, and I live for the banter between them as well the amount of protectiveness each of them feels. I have so many things to say about this book, too many racing thoughts, but this is my general thoughts as of right now.
Some cons of the book: I’m not entirely in love with Yarros’ writing style, it feels very cheap to me at times, but still consumable. Not that it’s terrible, and i think the good plotline makes up for it. It’s sometimes difficult to understand what’s going on, and I’ll have to reread or flip a few pages back to reorient myself, but that could just be me as a reader.

One could argue that there was too much going on, that there were too many people involved, that this ending is bulls**t... actually yes, I want to argue with Rebecca Yarros because respectfully, WHAT THE FUCK

Better than the second book but still not hitting as hard as the first did, please stop making it so hard to follow i just want to read about dragons not fight for my life in my downtime

Will read the next one as I have fomo but at what cost tbh, this is getting less enjoyable the longer we go on
