Skim offers a poignant portrayal of the complexities of adolescence. Personally, I feel I would have connected more if I were closer in age to Kim. As an adult, the explored themes don't resonate with my current life stage. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the unique art style and following the characters on their journey of self-discovery.

I originally read this because I read this one summer and I thought that was bittersweet and I quite liked it. Going into this book, i expected this to be a poignant, coming-of-age teen story. I thought it would be about a character learning who they truly are are. And that did happen. In the last TEN PAGES.

Basically, Skim over here is like “oh yeah. I’m like not depressed or suicidal. That’s so stupid

*Warning - the events of this book surround the repercussions of a suicide, but it is not the focus of the book*

Skim is a book that captures the essence of being a teenage girl in a snow globe, frozen in time, and then shakes the globe to show you different angles of it. You do not get too deep a dive into everything going on - you will leave some things up to conjecture - but you at least know that the sculpture in the globe is very genuine .

One of these genuine moments for me was hearing the phrase "loved on" - this is a phrase and a sentiment I remember from when I was a teenager. I do not know of my cohort of Torontonians owned that phrase, or if the language of teenagers is both mercurial and immortal simultaneously, but I was immediately transported!

Another aspect captured beautifully in this book is the idea that teenagehood is also when you start to subconsiously find a better fit for the people that you consider to be friends.

While not biographic, it is very clearly biographical - Kimberly could easily be a stand-in for the author. I do wonder if there are any follow ups - as the ending is abrupt.

This book really get the graphic novel story telling right, a minimum of words and maximum story told just through pictures. And they really are great pictures, the main character is drawn very utamaro, old school japanese. It seems to transcend the high-school melodrama that is the plot. In fact at first I thought it was autobiographical, mostly because really aren't most graphic novels? Well it seems to be anyways. But the book does get very personal and give off that vibe, I imagine that's the point, drawn somewhat like an elaborately decorated diary. A overall good read.

Just as empty as high school is... required reading for my comics class that I ordered before I dropped it lol which makes a lot of sense, the use of words & pictures was really interesting!
