I don't know why it took me so long to read this since Jillian Tamaki is one of my favorite illustrators. Her artwork here is not the most unique in the graphic novel world, but it's very expressive and very powerful, and she really makes it click well with the story. I really enjoyed how the story was so well developed and finished with a sort of moving-on rather than a typical full-circle return to normalcy. I agree that sometimes the 'Dear Diary' bits seem overdone. Other than that, it's an excellent work of art and a terrific read.
