When this book came out originally, I was aged similarly to the teenagers of the story. It hit hard for all the reasons it would to a teen.
Now, a decade later, it hits so much harder in very different ways. The development of the secondary adult characters is paramount. The questions asked are genuine, the fears and acknowledgments are honest.

سرطان از نمای نزدیک. کتاب داستان خیلی خاصی نداشت. منظورم از داستان خاص اینه که گره‌های خاصی نداشت ولی دوست‌داشتنی بود و دوست داشتی هی بخونیش و بخونیش و توی غمش فرو بری.
نمی‌گم آدم احساسی‌ای نیستم ولی معمولا با کتاب‌ها گریه نمی‌کنم. اگه بخوام بگم بیشترین اشکی که ریختم سر کدوم کتاب بود،باید همین کتاب رو نام ببرم. فصل‌های بیست تا بیست و دو رو اشک ریختم و خوندم، گرچه شاید مضحک به نظر بیاد.
خیلی چیزها می‌خوام بنویسم و نمی‌دونم چه‌جوری بیانشون کنم. فقط بگم اگه نمی‌تونین داستان‌های غم‌انگیز رو تحمل کنید اصلا سراغ این کتاب نرید. همه‌ی کتاب سراسر غمه. با اینکه شاید عشق شیرینی هم توش باشه اما همون عشق هم غمناکه . و با پایان‌بندی کتاب خیلی غم‌ناک‌تر هم می‌شه.
همیشه یکی از مرگ‌های محتملی که برای خودم در نظر می‌گیرم مرگ ناشی از سرطانه (البته خیلی هم غیرمحتمل نیست ولی شاید دنیا بخواد جور دیگه‌ای قدرتش رو بهم نشون بده). اگه اینجوری شد، امیدوارم که مثل بمب ساعتی نباشم. امیدوارم «آیزاکی» با بقیه رفتار نکنم. امیدوارم با ضربه زدن به کمترین آدم‌ها از این دنیا برم.
می‌خواستم فیلمش هم ببینم اما نمی‌دونم الان تحمل دوباره‌ی این حجم از دلگیری رو دارم یا نه.
پ.ن: می‌خواستم بهش چهار یا چهار و نیم بدم اما با پایان‌بندیش دلم نیومد پنج ندم. نمی‌دونم، شاید اینم یه «لطف سرطانی» باشه.

This book is generally really good. It just turns really stereotypical, and not necessarily in a good way. Had it been more self-aware, or written a bit differently, I would have given it 5 stars

About Hazel and Gus, Hazel has cancer, Gus Has had cancer - they meet in a support group. They fall in love and Gus supports Hazel through her “make a wish” - where they go to amsterdam. Hazel is really sick and gus supports her through her final moments, but sadly Gus dies first - which is a big plot in the story.
About love, finding humor in the sadness, grief, coming of age, forever a golden young adult !
