Set in 1989 Romania this depicts the dreadful reality of daily life under Ceaucescu’s regime and particularly how so many ordinary people were blackmailed/bribed/threatened to get them to spy on their neighbours and even their families.
I remember the Christmas Day downfall/execution of the Ceaucescus but there’s so much more about which I had very little idea.
Great to have a YA novel, laced with teenage issues and romance set in this shocking context to teach young people today about what happened.

Wow. This book hit hard. This was such a great read and very sobering. I feel like we read about communism, and there is a 'stereotype' for it but we do not truly understand how awful it is. As they were executing people they asked for final words. I took this quote because it just hit so hard!
"You have taken everything. I have nothing left to lose."

I finished this book in one afternoon. It was beautiful, haunting, and heartbreaking. My students don’t believe violations of human rights like this still exist, yet this happened in MY lifetime, right under the noses of the whole world. I can’t wait to share this will the school library.
