Set in Romania during the 1980s we are shown the life of Cristian and his family. All of them are terrified that all those they interact with are secret informants of the regime, and will expose them if they share their true feelings for their leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu. His life turns upside down one day when Cristian is found to have broken a rule and must also become an informant. Do they have any hope of a new way of life? When they can sneak radio time, they hear countries around them are changing. Can Cristian do anything from 'inside' the system to help bring that change? It is worth the risk?

This was very well written. However, the first 60% were just constant fear, oppressive and claustrophobic observation, and paranoia. Honestly, it was almost impossible to get through.

When the actual revolution started, and everyone was being tortured and shot and dragged around by police and imprisoned, things were actually happening, and even if they were horrible things, it became possible to continue the story. Anything is better than just paranoid obsessing over whether or not your family and friends are betraying you. (They always, always are.)

This book was well written, and it was hard to get through, and I didn't enjoy it. I'm gonna give Sepetys another chance, because her writing is great. But boy howdy. Wow. I'm glad this book is done.

Three stars for Cristian and Liliana. Two stars have been removed because this book might have shortened my lifespan.

Total score: 3/5

A really informative and interesting book. I felt that the first half was handled better and had better pacing.

I can't believe I waited this long to read a book by Ruta Sepetys! What an amazing author, I was completely immersed in the story. The characters are so well written that they are all brought to life. Even secondary characters are more than just props for the main characters. Really loved this one and I can't wait to read more by Sepetys.

Great book with fabtastic historical research. The history is real, the characters fictional.

I'm Romanian, so this book made me sad and angry and proud and many other things. Learned a lot about the hardships my parents and my grandparents had to endure. Most of them I knew about - but many I didn't. This is definitely a must read. Well written and researched, truly a powerful book with an interesting story - a book that you cannot put down.
