I read this for the "Out of Your Comfort Zone" square on the book bingo, but it kind of turned out to be real in my comfort zone. I read through it pretty quick. I loved Hurley's take-no-crap attitude and wish more people would take her advice about representation and community-membership to heart.
Kameron Hurley's collection of essays isn't just an incredible set of arguments fighting for the inclusion and celebration of women in geek spaces--it's also a comforting and empowering reflection on the life experiences that make up women's stories, both on and off the shelves.
Definitely pick this one up.

In general this is the sort of interesting and often angry writing about genre that is firmly in the Le Guin mould, except several decades younger.

This book started with the challenges of a writer and the need for persistence and perseverance. And then moved to cultural analysis of popular TV shows and films, rising cultural and feminist issues. She is upfront about her own blind spots and about her own fallibility. Willing to own up to mistakes which is a quality I greatly admire. Everything is interspersed with personal experiences from the abusive first boyfriend to a life threatening chronic disease. The book touches on issues like Gamer-gate, Sad puppies trying to influence the Hugo awards, internet trolling, and what it means when the power balance changes and you shift from being the underdog to being The Man. All in all an engaging read and certainly thought provoking.
A fantastic collection of essays. Highly recommended. Definitely a book I plan on keeping and lending out to people. Some of the things Hurley was talking about resonated so much with me that I had to pull out my tabs and mark passages. The sign of a great read to be sure!
An interesting collection which outlines Hurley's ideas and philosophies. I loved her "We have always fought" essay and wanted to read more. I was not disappointed as the rest of her writing is engaging and topical, particularly to the geek community.
I skipped around a lot in this collection, but I really enjoyed what I read. the essay about Mad Max Fury Road was my favorite. I plan on coming back to this and reading what I skipped for now.
A friend recommended this book to me and I am so glad they did! This book is AMAZING! If I had an anthem, this book would be it. I want all of my friends to read this book so that I can talk about it with all of them. Loved it!
