This book is unapologetically pulled from the author's blog posts, so there's some of that repetition going on that all blog-derived books seem to have, but I think it covers its ground well. I think that someone who had read a little less in this area would have gotten more out of it, as in many places the author wasn't saying anything I didn't already know, just saying it with a little more entertaining swearing. But it's a good flying look at how women are treated both in the world and in sci-fi and publishing and on the internet, and how fucked up that is. It's also a grimly optimistic look at how the world is imperfect and unfair but we have to keep moving forward anyway, doing the best we can.

Goodreads Summer Reading Challenge, July: Embrace Your Inner Geek (Read a book about geek culture)
"But we can only reimagine the world if we see the one we're actually living in."
"The abyss, my friends. Don't stare too long in it. You get to choose the person you want to be, so you better choose wisely."
"I'm only really alive when I'm pissing people off anyway."
Funny, inspiring, relatable. At once a balm and a sprinkling of salt in the wounds to motivate you to get up and DO something

Essential reading

After reading this, i think that every storyteller, every person who reads, writes, publishes etc. should read the first collection of essays.

The Geek Feminist Revolution is a pretty decent starting point for people starting to get into feminist non-fiction. It takes on a more liberal feminist approach, but with points that really encourage you to think about,

Read this book if you want to have any sort of relevant discussion about geek culture in the future. Wonderfully sarcastic and biting Hurley delivers the goods right on time.

Really interesting essays. I felt like some of them kind of blended together because they presented the same kind of life stories from her past but I really enjoyed her honest critique of modern events. I felt like she provided an optimistic and yet reserved outlook on anything. Though I didn't agree with everything, overall I felt like she was voicing the same concerns I have, just more eloquently.

Very excited to release this JBC episode. Everyone should read this book - it is such a good look at pop culture, internet culture, and what we should be focusing on.
