A fairly quick read, but I have to agree with the other reviewers here: if you are picking this book up, chances are you have an interest in the topic and you agree with most/all of it. Many of the situations (gamergate/Sad Puppies), I have read about on my own so those parts were a little repetitive to me. The writing is very solid, and Hurley has a strong, educated voice.

I liked this book a lot, even if it was not exactly what I was expecting, mostly because at the beginning I didn't like the author so much, but in the end I really appreciate the straight way she has to describe even the worst things, the one we prefer to ignore for example. So I got a lot of information about the world of sci-fi writers, women bloggers and videogame designers and books too, the way they are written and shaped. A recommended reading in my opinion.

A great read that got me thinking and helped me better understand the protagonist of The God's War (I usually read sunnier speculative fiction).

Really wasn’t what I was expecting. Not quite my cup of tea.

I expected this to be more about facts about women in traditional and digital media etc. but it's mainly tips on persistence and fighting back and observances on how men will try to suppress you through the author's experience as a science fiction writer and blogger. Seems a little too personal at times but she does have some very inspirational sentiments.

An extremely powerful collection of essays!

I cannot recommend highly enough this collection of essays on feminism and other social justice causes in geek culture, explored from the author's perspective as a feminist sci-fi author. Some of these essays were very timely for me - I started reading this during a weeklong hospitalization, and found my experiences mirrored by Hurley's own hospitalization with some very similar problems. But as a feminist author myself, and someone who tries to remain conscious of social justice work, this collection was especially powerful for me. Definitely worth reading!

This book was the perfect example of why you shouldn't quit reading a book before you are finished. I almost did. I came this close to clicking it off and moving on. Life is too short to listen to some drama queen wax on and off about her struggles getting published at such a young age (blech).

However, the title kept nagging at me. There must be some good stuff in here somewhere. I am looking for narrative around gender justice, the medias lack of respect for the contribution of women, the free for all social media takes at personally and verbally assaulting women who have an opinion.

I got there, but it took to the last third of the book. Long after the humble-bragging and fear mongering about her chronic life threatening disease "that tries to take her life daily". Spoiler alert - it is diabetes. I am not saying diabetes isn't serious. It is. I should know. But if you are that close to death every day maybe you should find a new doctor.

Also, her world was ending because she was $30,000 in debt. Pardon me while I let the real world in.

Anyway, get past all that content that probably had to be added because this really wasn't a novel, but an essay - a good essay. It really is and I appreciate her take no prisoner attitude towards writing her science fiction novels the way she wants to and not how the male-dominated industry demands.

This is when I regret that it was an audiobook because I would have highlighted some of those great points. Speaking of audiobook....let me say not all authors should narrate their own books. Just sayin.

Oh, and if you are wondering why there is a llama on the cover. Don't think the book will answer that question. I think she was smoking some payote during that part.

Pues bastante bien, oye.

This will definitely be a constant re-read, and I shall quote it several times. Well done.

There's obviously something here for sci fi fans, but this book is so much more than that: it is, at its core, interesting and though-provoking writing about being a woman in today's world.
