Melodramatic, too many random POVs, gratuitous self-pity

Eva Mercy is a single mom who is reaching a turning point in her career. While she is grateful to her loyal fans and her long erotica book series, Cursed, she is itching for something new. When she turns up at an authors panel and unexpectedly sees reclusive and best-selling author Shane Hall, her world is flipped on its axis. Shane is newly sober, working as a teacher and mentor to under resourced kids. Over the next seven days, Shane and Eva reunite after a whirlwind love twenty years ago, and while they are both so different from their past selves, their chemistry is once again undeniable. While yearning and passion are clearly there, secrets must be confessed if Eva can risk her heart to Shane once again.

While a beautiful and passion filled love story, this was also a great look at motherhood and legacy. Eva has a very challenging relationship with her mother, and she works so hard to make sure her own daughter never knows the struggles she faced. Meanwhile, Shane has only ever written while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and now he is newly sober unsure of what he will do next. I loved the flashbacks, and could feel the visceral connection between our two main characters. This is a great read for any romance lover!

3.5.
This one is hard to rate because the quality of the book is really high. The writing is really strong, the characters are well developed. Plus I loved the fact the heroine is a black women, single mother and has an invisible illness. I think there’s far too few books about a black protagonist, queer protagonist, Asian, etc. where it’s part of their identity but the story isn’t focused on that and the social/political commentary. It’s just them living their lives and the book made a comment about it.
My issue is a personal one. I don’t really like second chance romances and as a result the romance just didn’t work for me.
