Absolutely breathtaking and stunning history. Should be a work taught in every South Carolina history class going forward and one I wish had been there for me as I was learning things the first time growing up in SC.

Interesting book. I love history and genealogy.

Great resource for historical fiction authors. Some of the stories mentioned remind me of events that happened in Sunflower Sisters.

This is a very moving account of an embroidered sack that tells the story of enslaved women. The historical background is well-done, and the book illustrates that history is told in many ways, not just through written archives. The discussion of women’s needlework is also really interesting.

This is an academic book, and it is a marvelous exploration of the nuances of objects and what they meant to the lives on enslaved people and their descendants. From one embroidered seed sack, passed from a mother to her daughter at the time of the daughter’s sale to a different location, Dr. Miles conjures entire worlds and hidden meanings.
