Oh my god this is one of the best books I have ever read
2024 read, I would call this less of a book and more of a religious experience

Slow, but for such a short book the story was wonderful and the prose was absolutely stunning.

“It’s not that i never noticed before how many red things there are in the world. it’s that they were never more relevant to me than green or white or gold. nod its as if the whole world sings to me in petals, pebbles, blood. not that it didn’t before—garden loves music with a depth impossible to sound—but now it’s song’s for me alone.”

Two agents on rival sides of a war fall in love. Red and Blue. The story is purposely vague but I liked the themes presented showing that love is love no matter the time, space, proximity, sexuality, age and it transcends everything. It was very different from anything that I've read and I liked the combination of letter writing and plotting. Very confusing though.

4/5 stars

3.5 stars. i enjoyed the style of writing but took me until 2/3 of the way through the book to get engaged with the storyline. also with so much world building in such a short time, i’m still a little confused.

The language of this book is incredible! I found out only after reading that Red and Blue were each written by two authors, reacting to each other's letters, which adds a whole other layer to the genius of the writing.

I was definitely confused about the overarching plot while reading, and I wished there had been just a little more elaboration on the Garden and the Agency; I would have been more invested in the Time War and the protagonists if I full understood what each side was fighting for. Still, the themes and characters are the focus of the story, and it does a fantastic job with them. (Plus, this was a great read right after watching the time-travelling spectacle of Tenet!)
