I definitely see how this has its place in sci-fi history. It's very deserving of that! Not my personal favorite. It was a little confusing at times, but I truly believe it's because of 1890's English! Creep novel, creepy idea.
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Confinement, Gun violence, Torture, Violence, Blood, Medical content, Murder
This novel wasn't what I expected so I'm really torn on my rating of 2.5 stars. There were scenes in this book that got my blood pumping and kept my attention and these were the best parts of the book. The rest of the plot was a let down for me as I found it dull and uneventful, which if you're stranded on an uncharted island with mad scientists and their creations neither feeling should be present. It took me a long time to read this book (13 days to be exact) because I couldn't make myself read more than a few chapters at a time.
I've been interested in reading H.G. Wells but never picked one of his stories up. When a school friend asked if we could do a buddy read for a class I agreed. If it wasn't for this pact I probably would have given up on this book.
A good thing about this book is that important messages can be taken from it. Honestly it's a perfect school reading book because my friend and I had a few discussions about science, morals, ethics, and animal rights due to this novel. My friend liked it more than I did but we both agree it's not the best science fiction book we've ever read. Guess I had higher hopes for my first H.G. Wells novel. Need to think about whether I should read another of his books or not.

Was a little slow at the beginning but it picked up speed and was a very enthralling and thought provoking piece.

The first few chapters felt like a slog to get through, but once he reaches the island things really pick up. The atmosphere in this book is so tense and the body horror is excellent. The questions raised by the book about humanity and scientific ethics still hold up today
