I rated this 3 stars because the first half was 2 stars (very slow & uneventful), but the second half was 4 stars (emotional, eventful, much more engaging). 

Something that stands out about this book is just how atmospheric it was; it made me yearn for the beach & many times while reading I would put on some ocean ambient sounds to further immerse myself in the setting.

The first half of this book was pretty terrible and I actually thought about DNFing it several times. It got better for the second half, as long as you accept that there aren't any actually likeable characters.
