As much as I loved TJR books, this one didn't particularly hit me as hard as 'The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It was a good read, but not a great one. There were a lot of tear-jerking and thought-provoking parts of the book that made me love it and it delved into serious life issues and choices. 
It was slow-paced compared to other books of TJR. The second half focused a bit on characters that weren't relevant to the story and so that was a bit of a turn-off. The ending was incomplete and I would like to have a sequel to it. There's so much that was left unfinished. However, the most remarkable thing about the book was the time switch in the first half. It was absolutely intriguing and written so amazingly well.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my favourite authors, I think, and I’ve only read two of her books!
So this book is about a family and their history and you really get to see into each of the siblings/ and every family members mind. they’re a family who live near the ocean and I’ve never read a book that’s about surfers, which was really cool.
So there is a famous party where every hollywood star is and like the author said in the Q&A it’s really inspired by the great Gatsby. It was quite interesting, but it just kind of felt like one of those romance movies (Love Actually), because sometimes in between the chapters about the family you have like two pages where there’s a random star who hooks up with someone else or who finds the love of their life at this party, which is just so random, but kind of fun tbh
literally all of the men in this book are red flags!!!

  Oh my God the women (June and Nina) get pushed around by them, but there’s some very good character development in the end which is everything I ever wanted while reading! God I hate Mick Riva so much how can you be such a horrible person?? 

 
 To be honest I’m not sure if I’m going to read ‘Carrie Soto is back’ any time soon because she does not seem like a great person in this book. I’m sure that it’s going to be interesting but I think I just don’t wanna read it right now. 
Junes story makes me so mad omg :(((

Read this book if you're looking for: historical fiction, 80s vibes, different timelines, family drama, badass women MC

I really enjoyed this book but honestly I was expecting to love it like I’ve loved all of TJRs books so far. 

That’s not to say it wasn’t great, I really enjoyed reading about the Riva children and the MANY struggles that they faced. I liked how we got to see everything that happened on one single night told from everyone’s points of view. BUT in my opinion there were TOO MANY points of view. I found it very hard to keep track. It would bounce not only between the 4 main characters but then also side characters too and that got very confusing.

One thing I did really enjoy about this book (not a spoiler) was the perspective of the Riva kids and their love for their siblings. Each wanted to be better, stronger, and more resilient because they thought they had to be. In the end it really showed how the family bonded and saw the unconditional love they had for each other. 

I like family stories, especially siblings.

It's August 1983 and Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party is underway. By 12am it is out of control, by the morning it will have gone up in flames. Taylor Jenkins Reid is an amazing world builder, the way all her books link to one another is absolutely fascinating. The characters are always so well written, whether they're terrible people or not. The Riva siblings are some of the most amazing character written in modern literature and I just adored this book so much. I loved the two different time periods going on at the start, and how it makes you want to keep reading further. Safe to say I will be reading more TJR books. I recommend this book to everyone.
