I really enjoyed this book, it all took place at one celebrity filled party in Malibu as well as flashbacks. The story centers around four siblings who have lived through some very hard times due to the love and hard work of their mom and oldest sister. During this party you find out all the secrets they have been keeping from one another and what they truly need to be happy in this life.

This was so much better than I expected!
I loved the relationships between the Riva siblings! I loved how they looked out for each other (and how they cared for Casey :’)

Nina Riva!!! Ever since we got to see her as a five year old, I was in love. She was definitely not perfect and made some difficult and questionable decisions, but it was so interesting to see why she did the things she did and how she provided for her family. She devoted her life to caring for her siblings, and she set boundaries that needed to be set.

The characters all grew so much! Their pasts made huge impacts on their lives, but there was so much character development and generational cycles were broken 👏🏻

The sexual content did get annoying, but it wasn’t graphic enough for me to stop the book. I just wish it was more brief/implied

Overall, this book surpassed my expectations and I can see myself rereading this one in the future

now that i've completed TJR's big three (evelyn hugo, daisy jones, malibu rising) i've come to the conclusions that there is a huge difference in quality in how they write white characters vs characters of colour. caucasian chaos is what TJR is a lot better at. there's nothing wrong with sticking to the rivers and the lakes that we're used to.

the rivas are a great family. the moments between the siblings were so tender and heartfelt. the ordering of the timeline (interweaving past and present) was fab. it was nice to finally put a face to the name re: nick riva - because he was referenced in the other books in the TJR literary universe.

to me, nina was the stand out character of the book. her arc really spoke to me as an eldest daughter and sister - she had to grow up so fast because of her circumstances; the weight of that was depicted v well.

This book was really good and really well written. I loved the story and the characters. I feel like the ending was a little anticlimactic, I thought something more was going to happen, but it was overall a good read. It was easy to get through and had a nice flow.

“Family is found...whether it be blood or circumstance or choice, what binds us does not matter. All that matters is that we are bound.”
