I won't say that I disliked this book, because that would be inaccurate. I rather enjoyed the characters presented and liked getting to know them. But I really struggled to keep reading this. Especially when Marcellus is "looking for homespun", I'm sure the author was trying to show his conversion to Christianity, but to me it was fairly empty and more just words on a page than convincing.

It was definitely an interesting read to consider the perspectives of those at the time just following Jesus Christ's crucifixion. There are many time period explanations that help one to see how the message could have been spread among nations.

I must say though, I am glad it is over and I can move onto a more fast paced book.

This was a wonderful book. I loved the movie in high school and am pleasantly pleased that although the book is different, it's just as good (if not better) than the movie. I loved getting to know Marcellus and Demetrius and going on their adventures with them. They were realistic characters who had their strengths and weaknesses and grew throughout the story. It was especially satisfying getting to know the Savior through their eyes. I loved reading about the time period after Christ died and how the author depicted the strength and courage of early Christians. Even though I didn't always agree with every single thing that this book taught (especially the explanation of the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000), I thought the overall message was poignant and powerful. The only thing that prevented me from giving this book five stars was a sluggish middle part and an ending that felt a little rushed. This was an excellent read.

The Robe, which most would remember as the movie filmed in the 50's and starring Victor Mature, was actually first a very popular novel that sold over 2 million copies in one printing. It was written by a prominent minister by the name of Lloyd C. Douglas, who also wrote a number of other novels with religious overtones. Among them was another for which he is famous, titled Magnificent Obsession. Having seen the movie several times on television as a child, when I learned it was also a novel, I found it in my high school library and read it. Though I enjoyed it, it was clearly written in a different time period, and with a sort of stilted, formal style that seems to me to be characteristic of novels written earlier in the 20th century. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the story as a boy, and especially the slightly superior feeling of having read the book upon which the movie everyone had seen was based.

Side note: Though Victor Mature was a popular actor, I never much cared for his portrayals of any sort...he always seemed to me to be a bit smarmy, oily in personality, and carrying a faintly mocking air even when he was trying to act the part of someone humble and sincere. Supposedly, he once said that he was successful with religious themed movies because he could "make with the holy look." I don't know whether that is true, but it certainly fits with what I believe about him.

More of a message book (and a moving one at that) than a well written, 3-D characters book.

An uplifting piece-- you get close to the main character, Marcus, and feel close to the story of Jesus Christ. A tear jerker every time. Highly recommend it!
