mixed feelings with this one. kinda feel like the plot was lost about 3/4 of the way through the book, but at the same time the ending felt predetermined.
so much to explore and reflect on about the exploitation of the poor and women, about morality and its role in religion, religious justification, governmental neglect. definitely a thinker book, but left me wanting closure.

moshfegh continues to be a genius, but this one made me too nauseous to rate it any higher than this

I could not put it down for the first 1/3. But by the halfway mark, it felt cheap and hollow. Eh.

A phenomenally written extremely uncomfortable book. The way she cycles through character perspectives effortlessly makes this book a quick read. Dark and almost blasé but that’s what I’d expect from this author. It’s not necessary to have a deep understanding of Christianity but think it would help with some of the symbolism within the book. Overall, just not a book I enjoyed.

Moshfegh tells a surface level story about religion and human nature that has been told before with worse characters and a boring plot.

To put it plainly i did not like this book. It was so boring. The provocative details just felt so unnecessary. Every character annoyed me to no end and were written in a kids movie villain type of way.
